What Is Open Enrollment?
The annual window when anyone can enroll in or change a Marketplace plan, without needing a qualifying life event.
The main enrollment window
Open Enrollment (sometimes called OEP) is the one time each year when anyone can sign up for a new Marketplace plan or switch plans, no qualifying event required. It typically runs in the fall, but the exact start and end dates — and how long the window lasts — can change from year to year based on federal rules, so it's worth confirming the current dates rather than assuming they're the same as last year.
What happens if you miss it
If Open Enrollment passes and you don't have a qualifying life event for a Special Enrollment Period, you generally have to wait until the next Open Enrollment to sign up — this is one of the most common and most avoidable coverage gaps.
Why review even if you're already covered
Plans, networks, and premiums can change every year, even for people who keep the same plan on paper — carriers adjust their offerings annually. Reviewing your options each Open Enrollment, instead of letting your plan auto-renew without checking, is the single easiest way to avoid an unpleasant surprise.
Common mistakes
- Assuming the dates are the same every year without checking.
- Letting a plan auto-renew without comparing it against what else is now available.
- Waiting until the last few days of the window, when help can be harder to schedule.
